Cooperative Profile
Maasai Art is a self-help group started in 2004
with the aim of raising the standard of living for rural
Maasai women in Kenya. The organization improves the self
esteem of the women and gives them a sense of accomplishment
and achievement by providing a sustainable economic outlet
for their products. Starting with 54 registered members, the
group now has more than 200 members. Forty-five percent of
the women are widows and single mothers with no basic
education.
The Bartel Arts Trust, or the BAT Shop, is an urban-based
community art center that is a venue and facility for skills
training, promotion and exposure of disadvantaged and
emergent artists in South Africa to preserve tribal Zulu
arts.
